Genomics and Genetics
Please tell us about your research project.
I am a PhD candidate in Genomes and Genetics at Institut Pasteur through the Pasteur-Paris University International Doctoral Program (PPU). My research focuses on the evolution and conservation of immunity across the tree of life. All living things from bacteria to humans have an immune system used to detect self vs. invading non-self. Some immune modules are highly conserved between diverse species. I work to study these conserved proteins to better shape our understanding of how immunity has evolved.
Could you please tell us a bit more about your scholarship/exchange programme?
Through generous support from the Pasteur Foundation UK and the PPU-Oxford program, I am able to undertake research at the University of Oxford this Michaelmas term. I am doing a research project studying the evolution of immunity in plants in the lab of Eunyoung Chae (Magdalen College). This research stay will add invaluable insight into my thesis development and will teach me novel laboratory techniques. Staying at the MFO offers the unique experience of critically engaging with other academics across disciplines I wouldn't normally be exposed to.
First impressions of Oxford/the University?
The University has an open and collegiate atmosphere which extends out into the city as well. Oxford is full of many unique shops, excellent bookstores and cafés. It's easy to get lost wandering around this historic city.
